CHAPTER 29

Logan

Again I’m feeling like an idiot. I’ve been pushing Ryan away lately because the physical connection between us was beyond amazing and he’d nearly–I think–confessed that he loves me. It scared the fucking shit out of me. I’m not ready to hear those words or say them.

If I’m being honest with myself I’m in love with Ryan but I feel like I don’t deserve to have him love me back and I don’t have the time for him, that he deserves. I barely see my parents and now Lindsey has gone back to hers–and only babysits Miley when I’m desperate–I don’t see her anywhere near as much as before and as much as I’d like to either.

Thankfully today she was free to come over for dinner, and we’re sitting on the couch sipping on beers whilst waiting for the lasagna to cook. We’re not talking, just both watching Miley as she uses the coffee table to hoist herself up to a standing position. I’m trying not to freak out. I think my girl is about to start walking, as she’s been standing up a lot lately.

Lindsey glances at me and then nods towards Miley.

“Logs, I think she’s going to walk.”

I nod, and shift off the couch, crouching down and extending my arms towards my daughter. And then it happens. My daughter toddles towards me–actually starting to walk–smiling and giggling before she falls into my outstretched arms.

“Aww, baby girl you did it! You walked!” I say eagerly to her, peppering her cute chubby cheeks with kisses that cause her giggles to increase.

I put her back down on her feet, and sit back up on the couch. She plops down on her bottom, and grabs her toy bunny–that she’s had since she came to live with me–from the coffee table and she starts to play with it, kissing it and throwing it around.

“Well, she walked early, Logs, so you can’t be doing too bad with this parenting gig.”

“Yeah, but I’m sucking at everything else in my life.”

“What do you mean?”

“With Ryan. What I said to him was stupid.”

“You do know how to put your foot in it. What did you say this time?”

“I freaked out after our night together, and said we should just be friends.”

“Really Logan?” Lindsey sneers at me, shaking her head so her blue streaked hair swishes from side to side.

“Yeah, but I was kinda hoping we’d go back to the friends with benefits thing.”

“Right,” she affirms with a snide tone and a scoff. “And he wasn’t down with that, I’m guessing?”

“No, he really has put me in the friend zone, with no benefits.”

“Have you spoken to him at all?”

“No, not really. He won’t answer my calls, and his texts are just pleasantries.”

“Well, I can’t blame the guy for pushing you away. You’ve been a colossal dick lately.”

“Hey, come on Linds. You know first hand how hard it’s been for me becoming a dad.”

“I do Logan. But you can’t use Miley as an excuse. I told you, that you make time for the people you love.
